Suurpää's book is a highly valuable addition to the literature on Winterreise, while also being one that develops innovative approaches to the analysis of vocal music in general. It would be most interesting to apply the same methodology to the first thirteen songs of the cycle (or indeed to other songs and song cycles) to find out whether.   The first thing one is confronted with when considering Winterreise is the very clearly documented history of the cycle’s well-known interpreters. Easy access to the many recordings, video performances, books, and essays on the cycle inform our experience of the piece in a way that would have been unimaginable to Schubert himself.

Similarly, few of the renowned singers, conductors and pianists have been, or are, Austrian. In his enthralling book on Winterreise Ian Bostridge writes that Schubert's music “was played by most of the great instrumentalists of the day”. There, for once, Bostridge is mistaken.   A new book promises to deepen the understanding of the legions of “Winterreise” devotees, while offering encouragement to interested music .

But the book concerns itself mostly with expounding, in a very scholarly way, the period background of the songs: the romantic literature of the time: the theme of melancholy, loneliness and alienation; that of the Wanderer; Schubert’s own life (that he was fatally ill while he composed the Winterreise gives a special resonance to the several Cited by: 3.

An excellently presented book but I wish I had realised before I bought it that it is pitched a 5th lower for a baritone rather than a tenor. I bought it so that I could follow the score while listening to the tenor, Ian Bostridge, singing Winterreise.

This key difference should be made more clear in the blurb/5(8). Both books deal in their independent ways with Schubert’s Winterreise, a compendium of 24 songs amongst his last, arguably the world finest. Winterreise book They are bleak and austere passages of a wanderer, theatrical and melodious, speaking of lost love.

Winterreise can seem a little intimidating. Its 24 gloomy songs are to be taken in one, extended, minute dose. Its 24 gloomy songs are to be taken in.

Winterreise, (German: “Winter Journey”) cycle of 24 songs for male voice and piano composed in by Austrian composer Franz Schubert, with words by German poet Wilhelm Müller. Schubert was reviewing the publisher’s proofs of the cycle in the weeks before his death, shortly before his 32nd.

The poetic cycle, Die Winterreise, is thus in some respects a different work from Schubert’s cycle Winterreise (the composer omitted the definite article for a starker, stronger effect). In these poems, Müller took a Romantic cliché – an alienated, isolated wanderer on a journey into the wintry geography of the soul in search of self.

Franz Schubert's Winterreise is at the same time one of the most powerful and one of the most enigmatic masterpieces in Western his new book, Schubert's Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession, Ian Bostridge - one of the work's finest interpreters - focusses on the context, resonance and personal significance of a work which is possibly the greatest landmark in the history of s:   A year before his death at 31 Franz Schubert published 'Winterreise' or 'winter's journey', a series of 24 poems set to music exploring unrequited love.

Schubert described them as 'truly terrible'. Schubert's Winterreise, well known to the classical music fan as a superb song cycle, unites many qualities--wonderfully catchy music, poetical song texts, and a moving story. The Berlin-based photographers Kass Kara have portrayed the winter journey in unusual photos.

Their pictures have an amazing, sensual beauty, modern and timeless alike. Looking again through the book to write this review I realized how compelling it is, while opening it at any page, to follow the author in his thoughts and be elated beyond the music discussed, into its magic.

Please excuse my English: I enjoyed the book Cited by: 2. The greatness of a timeless, transcendent work of art like Winterreise lies precisely in how it sustains and bears so many different interpretations - most add something new, or different, to our total experience.

So thanks, Ian and Leif, for this. P.S. Bostridge's book is a nice read, too/5(17). This website uses cookies so that we can provide you with the best user experience possible.
